Welcome to Shri Shri Doul Govinda Temple

Situated on the northern bank of the mighty Brahmaputra, the temple of Shri Shri Doul Govinda at North Guwahati is one of the most revered shrines of Lord Krishna. Historical reference to this temple dates back to more than two centuries ago. But folklores hint at an even earlier age for the famous idol of Lord Krishna present at the shrine. Although mostly worshipped by Vaishnavites and Hindus, the temple is thronged by people from all religions, castes and communities. It is believed that the Lord grants the wishes of anyone who offers prayers at this temple with a pure heart.

History & Heritage

Archaeologically drawn traces indicate existence at Rajaduar, of Kamrup Nagar. The capital city Durjaya established by the powerful Pala kings, until 1260 A.D. when the capital was shifted to Karnatapur in North Bengal.

The Advent

Miraculous was the Advent of Lord Doul-Govinda who had remained underground, not precisely known for how long, in the quiet woods of Sandhya-Jhar near village JEKERIA in Rongia Sub- division of Kamrup district.

The Pancha Tirtha (The Five Shrines)

The human habitation of Rajadooar where the temple of Lord Doul Govinda is located is protected by an elongated stretch highland named Chandra Bharati Mandap (mound). It is believed that poet Anantakandali of Hajo who was also famous as poet Chandra Bharati for his works 'Kumar Haran Kabya' came here to participate in a symposium on the Epic-Mahabharata held at Umananda. This symposium is said to have been organised in honour of Maharaj Nara-Narayan; the great Koch king, and poet Chandra Bharati was welcomed at this hillock at North Guwahati.
